The retaining works of Notre Dame de Paris were completed, allowing the restoration work to begin, two years after the fire, which destroyed the roof of the historic cathedral.

Shortly after the fire in April 2019, French President Emanuel Macron had stated that the cathedral, which dates from the 12th century, should be rebuilt, and later promised the church to reopen to the faithful by 2024, when France will host the Olympic Games.

The final phase of efforts to secure the temple’s framework included reinforcing fire-damaged domes with huge wooden frames, the state-run service said, adding that it was well on track to meet the president’s goal on the reopening date.

The cathedral will be restored according to its previous plan.

The restoration work is expected to begin in the coming months, following the selection process of the companies that will submit a bid. Prior to that, a clean-up operation of the building, walls and floor will begin this month, according to the service.

The fire at Notre Dame de Paris shocked France and the world.
