Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew laid the foundation stone of the Orthodox Church of the Three Hierarchs in Budapest today, Saturday, September 11, 2021.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister of Hungary, Dr. Zsolt Semjén, representatives of the country’s authorities, foreign diplomats and other officials.
In his welcoming speech, Mr. Zsolt Semjén said that Hungary, which received its first bishop from Byzantium after the conquest, resp. the Ecumenical Patriarchate „will never forget that it belongs to the Ecumenical Throne. Hungary has always been a bridge between Eastern and Western Christianity. In the person of St. King Stephen of Hungary, the eastern and western missions were linked“.
For his part, His All-Holiness thanked the Hungarian government for the building and the resources provided for the construction of the new temple. He emphasized that the dialogue center under construction would be „a place of dialogue, culture, faith and exchange, open to all people of good will„.
„The new temple will embody the bond between Byzantium and the Hungarian people dating back a thousand years – a good tradition of this inseparable bond, as well as the need to move forward together,“ the Ecumenical Patriarch added.
